A MAN who was provoked into assaulting someone in the centre of Clydebank has been put under a curfew for four months.

Shaun Leonard, of Watchmeal Crescent, Faifley, previously pleaded guilty that under provocation he assaulted a man and attempted to punch him on the head, then struck him on the head and knocked him to the ground to his severe injury.

The incident happened on January 18, 2020, in the town's Alexander Street. After being put on bail, the 27-year-old later failed to appear for a subsequent hearing.

At Dumbarton Sheriff Court on February 20, defence solicitor Scott Adair said there had been "an incident in the pub not involving him" and "he became involved outside".

He said the victim "tried to get towards" his client and Leonard struck him and he fell against a parked vehicle and then to the ground.

Sheriff Maxwell Hendry said: "If it had not been for the amendment [to the charge] and adding words 'under provocation', the court would have been considering a custodial sentence."

Instead, he imposed an 18-month community payback order, with supervision by social workers for that time. He must take any drug or alcohol counselling or treatment as directed.

He will be under a curfew from 7pm to 7am each day for four months.
