A Clydebank man who ran off from police when they said he would be searched has been fined.

Marc Morgan, of Craigbanzo Street, Faifley, previously pleaded guilty to intentionally obstructing officers by absconding to avoid being searched for the possession of drugs.

The 23-year-old was stopped in Cart Street on August 11, 2023, heard Dumbarton Sheriff Court on February 13 when Morgan appeared for sentencing.

Fiscal depute Megan Dow said police witnesses were on patrol in the town and around 6.30am noticed a vehicle and instructed them to stop for a routine check.

On stopping them, the driver jumped out. He seemed nervous, placing his hands in his pocket and he began sweating.

Police tried to carry out a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

"At this point, he kept placing his hands in front of his trousers," said the prosecutor, "as though trying to hold on to something."

Morgan was told he would be subject to further searches and at this point, he made off in the direction of Glasgow Road.

Police caught up with him a few minutes later.

Morgan's defence solicitor said his client accepted running away from police.

Sheriff Maxwell Hendry asked: "Does he accept he began nervous and got more and more agitated and when he was informed he would be taken to Clydebank police office for a more thorough search, he ran off?"

The lawyer replied: "He accepts all of that."

But nothing was found on Morgan when arrested.

The solicitor said his client had no previous convictions and was a ground worker.

"He has no plans to involve himself in the criminal justice system again," added the defence.

Sheriff Hendry said: "You now have a criminal record under the Misuse of Drugs Act. That's going to live with you for quite some time.

"You have not got a record. I trust this is going to be the only time you appear before the courts."

Morgan was fined £300 plus a victim surcharge.
