THE former site of Faifley Bowling Club will be turned into new homes with councillors set to okay the plans.

The development of 27 affordable homes at the Abbeylands Road location will go before West Dunbartonshire Council’s planning committee on Wednesday, September 20.

Councillors are set to give the bid – which has been in the works since the council sold the land to Knowes Housing Association in 2019 – the green light for construction to begin.

The plans include 10 townhouses, eight cottage flats (including two wheelchair-accessible flats), nine flats with gardens and parking spaces for all the homes.

The development will comprise eight house types across the two and three-storey blocks, with sizes ranging from one-bedroom up to four-bedroomed homes.

The bowling club, which had two bowling greens, a pavilion building and a tennis court, closed in 2012 due to low usage and has since been earmarked for housing development.

As part of the proposals, the single-story pavilion will be demolished and replaced with a community garden, with plans to plant 43 new trees in the space.

The report submitted to councillors reads: “The layout and design of the development has been developed to ensure that it integrates with the existing residential form as well as creating a high-quality development which enhances the local residential area as well as improvements to the footpath and greenspace networks.

“The development will provide high-quality housing with good connections to the surrounding area and a wider green network.

“The provision of a community garden and enhanced open space will not only benefit this development but the wider area.”

Previously, five objections were submitted to the plans, with concerns about the height and type of housing, a worry about increased on-street parking and the loss of privacy for residents already living near the site raised.

The points raised in support of the proposal were that Faifley is small and more social housing is needed.
