KNIGHTSWOOD youngsters had a royally good time in London recently on a trip to the city to see their artwork brought to life.

We previously reported that pupils at Corpus Christi Primary had been selected as one of 15 winners of the UK-wide Tower of London Schools Coronation competition in April – the only Scottish school to win.

The competition tasked budding young artists with designing a bench to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

As part of their prize, the talented schoolchildren were given the opportunity to visit London to see their bench on display at the Tower of London.

The group left the Pikeman Road school at the crack of dawn on June 21 to fly down to the city.

Mrs Waugh, class teacher, told the Post the one-day venture was a fabulous experience for the youngsters with some enjoying new experiences such as flying on a plane for the first time and visiting a major city.

She said: “We left the school at half four in the morning and we weren’t back until around quarter to eleven at night.

“We flew down to Stanstead and then went straight to the Tower of London. First, we had a quick tour and then we saw the bench.

“It was really exciting, it looked amazing in real life. It made me feel really proud to see them actually getting to see it.

“Not to mention seeing the wee plaque that had our school name on it. It was a really great experience.”

After a full day of exploring – as well as enjoying ice cream and pizza – the exhausted pupils headed home.

Mrs Waugh added: “The children were absolutely exhausted as our school show bookended the trip so they’d been performing the night before and they were going to be performing the following day.

“By the time we’d got down there, had our lunch, seen the bench, and had a wee tour I think they were all exhausted and just wanted ice cream.

“It was a really nice day and they did so well. They were also really excited as very few of them had been to London before.

“Some of the pupils hadn’t been on a plane before or out of Scotland so it was a big deal for them.

"That’s what you want, you want to be able to give them new opportunities and I hope the trip will be something they remember.”

The bench will be on display at the Tower of London until September when it will be transferred to the Knightswood school.
