Bankies are known for a lot of things, be it their friendliness, good chat or sense of humour.
But one thing that is certain is that Clydebank folk love their food.
It is perhaps sometimes overlooked the wealth of good places to eat we have in the region, with an abundance of fine fare around, from top-notch pub grub to the tastiest takeaway in the west of Scotland, there is plenty on offer here on the banks of the Clyde.
And of course, who could forget our famous chippy on a boat?
The Post recently asked its readers what’s the best meal they’ve had in Clydebank and, as always Bankies didn’t disappoint in talking up their favourite dish.
Nearly 250 comments later, and in no particular order, we’ve compiled a list of your favourite places to dine.
The Ettirck
One of the most talked about establishments on the post, loads of you raved about the Indian food on offer at this well-known Old Kilpatrick bar. There were mentions of the ‘superb’ curries, from chicken korma and the chasni to the haggis pakora and the chilli korma, with the consensus being you always leave the Ettrick impressed. One wrote: “Their tandoori chicken tikka is amazing!!”
Sixty Ate Bar and Kitchen
Another popular one for our readers, it seemed the Mexcian dishes this popular pub puts on are the ones to try next time you are in. “Love their chicken fajitas”, one Bankie commented whilst another waxed lyrical about the enchiladas. Chicken tempura got more than one mention as did an old favourite - mac and cheese.
“Sixty Ate bar macaroni and cheese is amazing!”
Sam’s Restaurant
The first place solely dedicated to food on the list (not a pub) and this Hardgate Italian restaurant got a lot of love on our post. Ironically, everyone who opted for Sam’s didn’t specifically say which dish was their plate of choice – which must mean it is all good. The family-run eatery has been about for a while now and you can find it at Rockbank Place.
Goldenhill Bar and Function Suite
Another pub and another gold star food review by locals as plenty called out the Victoria Place venue as the place to be for a weekend munch. Again, enchiladas were recommended as was the salt and chilli chicken on offer and the honey chilli chicken. And it seems they are converting first-timers to their menu all the time, with one reader saying: “We tried the Goldenhill for the first time this week and the food was absolutely delicious!” Fair praise indeed.
The Park Bar
This Dalmuir bar sits on the corner of Agamemnon Street and Dumbarton Road and is a constant on the local pub scene, having been around for years. Apparently, according to you, the steak pie is the favourite of many during a visit, with multiple contributors describing it as ‘great’ or ‘amazing’. Here’s hoping the Park Bar remains for many more years to come.
The Glen Lusset
Another one for the Old Kilpatrick area, the Glen Lusset prides itself on being more than just a pub and an integral part of the local dining scene. And it seemed to be a feeling shared by many as the Lusset got a thumbs up from punters. The staff were also praised with one satisfied customer remarking: “the Glen Lusset all day long. Angie and the staff (will) see you okay.”
McMonagles
We couldn’t have a list without our very owned chip shop on a boat and McMonagles, as predicted, came out a popular choice for many of you. Noted as the world’s first ‘sail thru fish and chip’ – the famed Bankie boat won Scotland’s prestigious takeaway of the year award last July and many of you got in touch to tell us why.
One commented: “The boat in Clydebank, best fish and chips ever made!!”
Another said: “McMonagle's Boat fish supper” followed by four love heart face emojis.
A third added: “Fish and chips from McMonagle's fish boat.” Definitely, one to be proud of in the town.
A homemade meal
Clydebank might be filled with great places to eat out, but it is clear it is also populated by wonderful places to eat in thanks to the talented homemade chefs we have. So many of you told us you loved a home-cooked meal, from a late mum or dad’s spag bol, to some good old homemade soup.
“Best meal? Anything my wee granny made me for dinner!” Said one.
“My mum’s dinners back in the day,” another added.
“My mum's stovies,” mentioned a third.
