A MAJOR road in Knightswood has reopened over ten hours after it was forced to close as a fire broke out at a local takeaway.

The Post previously reported that emergency services were called to the scene at Freddie's Food Club on Great Western Road after the alarm was raised at around 8.30am on Thursday (February 2).

In an update, Police Scotland confirmed Great Western Road has reopened in both directions after a police cordon was put in place as fire crews worked to tackle the blaze. 

Local residents are being warned that a section of the footpath remains closed.

An investigation has since been launched into the fire with officers working with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to establish the circumstances.

There are no reported injuries.

Images sent to the Post showed the roof of the building had been completely destroyed.

Cops are urging anyone who was in the area on Thursday morning who may have information regarding the blaze or footage that could assist with their investigation to come forward. 

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are currently assisting colleagues from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service following a fire at a premises on Great Western Road, Glasgow which was reported to police at 8.45am on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

“Officers attended and assisted in traffic management with local road closures put in place.

“The roads are now open, however a section of footpath remains closed.

“No injuries have been reported and officers are currently working with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the circumstances of the fire.

“Anyone who was in the area this morning and has information or footage that can help investigations into the fire, should report these to 101 and quote incident number 0630 of February 2.”

A SFRS spokesperson added: "Fire crews left the scene on Great Western Road shortly before 5pm on Thursday, February 2.

"The fire has been extinguished and the area was made safe."
