A MAJOR new marine development at Old Kilpatrick has taken another step forward after the engineering company behind the plans appointed remediators.
Work is now set to begin on the Scottish Marine Technology Park (SMTP), which developer the Malin Group says will generate £125 million for the local economy once complete.
Malin announced it has hired specialist site investigation and environmental remediation contractors ERS (Environmental Reclamation Services), which will now begin works on the first phase of remediation required at the site.
Speaking of the partnership, ERS’ managing director, Andrew Mackenzie, said: “ERS has enjoyed developing this exciting and challenging project with Malin, their team and wider stakeholders.
"We now look forward to the start of site works and helping Malin release the value of its land.”
Following the start of remediation works, activities will commence early in the new year for the construction of a new flood compensatory storage pond, which when complete will be surrounded by a nature walkway, allowing access to the riverside for local residents.
Malin says the SMTP will provide a unique environment for world-leading innovators in the marine industry to co-locate and collaborate to reinvigorate shipbuilding and renewable industries on the banks of the Clyde.
Based on the north bank of the River Clyde in Old Kilpatrick, adjacent to the Erskine Bridge, the site consists of almost 50 acres of developable space with 'direct access to the deep-water channel via a deep-water quay with a heavy ship hoist.'
The group also reiterated a recent economic study suggests that the SMTP will create hundreds of new jobs and generate an additional £125million each year for the local economy.
Kevin Waters, principal project manager of the SMTP noted: “We are delighted to have ERS onboard, helping us move ahead with remediation of the site.
"With their commitment to using sustainable methods aligning with our vision for the SMTP, we look forward to working with them on what is a major step forward in our plans for the development of the SMTP.”
