AN URGENT appeal has been launched after a children's play hut was burned down at a primary school in Clydebank in the latest attack by firebugs at the area's schools.

Police were called to Edinbarnet Primary School, in Faifley, at around 3.30pm on Monday, September 26, after receiving reports that a wooden structure was on fire.

The blaze was successfully extinguished, with no injuries reported, but the wooden hut and all the toys that were stored within have been completely destroyed.

Officers carrying out the enquiries believe the fire was started deliberately and say that a group of youths, aged between 12 and 15, were seen in the area prior to the hut being set on fire.

CCTV footage is now being checked for any additional information which could aid their investigation.

Detective Constable Lee Cassidy said: "The wanton destruction of this hut has left schoolchildren with nothing to play with.

"I am appealing to anyone who was in the area on Monday afternoon to think back and consider if they saw anything suspicious.

"If you have any information then please do pass it on as it could assist us in locating those responsible for this criminal act."

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 0521 of September 27.

The Post previously reported on a fire which destroyed a hut housing play equipment at Gavinburn Early Learning and Childcare Centre in Old Kilpatrick in June.

And that same month, vandals set alight a wooden hut in the grounds of Our Lady of Loretto Primary in Dalmuir, also damaging wooden benches, toys and outdoor classroom resources.

The latter incident was the 11th time vandals had targeted the Castle Street school in the space of five months.

Gavinburn Primary, too, was targeted by vandals on two consecutive nights in April.
