A 60-year-old Clydebank 'Romeo' has been given six months in jail after admitting to breaching bail and a non-harassment order, a court has heard.

John Abraham of Kilbowie Road appeared from custody for sentencing after pleading guilty to the offences involving his partner, which took place on January 31 this year.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard last week how Abraham was caught ‘in the company’ of his beau by Clydebank cops at around 6.15pm.

At the time Abraham was under court orders not to approach or contact his partner because of previous offences involving her.

He was locked up to await sentence after his initial court appearance.

Procurator fiscal depute Daisy Bentley told the court that the cops who found the couple were on mobile patrol, and saw Abraham and his partner "walking and talking" together.

Sheriff John Hamilton described the couple as "straight from the pages of a Shakespearean tragedy".

He said: “Like Montagues and Capulets, they shouldn’t be together. They are starcrossed lovers.”

Abraham’s defence agent told the court: “He loves her, and she loves him.

“He did not come before the courts until he was 55 years old. The reason he now comes before the court, with almost monotonous regularity, is a combination of drinking and his relationship with [his partner].

“He wants to do something about the drinking. It has gone beyond the stage that he quite likes a drink. It is an illness. He has been receptive to all the help he has been given.”

Sheriff Hamilton told Abraham: “I think the court has no alternative to custody. The orders are in place to protect her and to protect you.”

Abraham was given six months in prison, backdated from February 1.
