A DISGRUNTLED football fan called emergency services and claimed there was a bomb at Ibrox Stadium the day Rangers beat Celtic 4-1 in an Old Firm clash.

Kevin O’Neill, from Clydebank, made the frightening fake bomb threat in a call to 999 staff on May 2 last year.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard the 29-year-old purposefully scared the call handler when he phoned and said: “Hi, there is a bomb at Ibrox.” He then swiftly ended the call.

The next day O’Neill began shouting homophobic abuse when police arrived at his then home address of Crescent Court to carry out enquiries.

Police found O’Neill heavily intoxicated as they were reviewing the phone call and confirmed his voice was him.

The hoax caller began shouting when he was arrested and placed in the back of the police vehicle, yelling ‘you f*****g creepy b******s’, ‘f*** off you p***k’, and ‘aye f*** you, you p***’.

The procurator fiscal depute said O’Neill had previously made hoax calls to the ambulance service over a week prior to this incident.

Defence solicitor Philip Lafferty said: “I don’t excuse any part of his behaviour as it causes extreme concern.

“Alcohol is behind all of this. Whilst not being an excuse, nevertheless it is a reality in his day-to-day life.

“This is clearly something that requires to be addressed to prevent further offending but the question is how that is best achieved.”

Sheriff William Gallacher said: “[The] question is why he didn’t do this weeks or months ago.”

He then blasted O’Neill for his actions during the hearing at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on February 8.

He told him: “Your behaviour in both of these incidents is utterly unacceptable.

“The fact that you were affected by alcohol takes you quite frankly nowhere. The community cannot tolerate that.

“The impact of what may have happened is utterly disgraceful. Police were doing their job.

“You may well have a serious alcohol problem, but the only person who can fix it is you - and nobody is stopping you.”

The sheriff placed O’Neill, now of Dumbarton Road, on a community payback order with 18 months of social work supervision.

There was also a conduct requirement to undertake alcohol counselling.

Rangers, who had already been crowned Premiership champions, won the match thanks to two goals from Kemar Roofe and one each by Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe. Odsonne Edouard scored Celtic’s only goal.
