A CLYDEBANK charity is calling on Bankies to donate unwanted jackets, bedding, curtains and blankets to help keep people warm this winter.

The Recycle Room has already distributed more than 300 coats in a single day following the launch of its Keep Warm campaign.

And the group is now calling on local businesses to urge their workforce to donate old jackets, which can be used to keep someone else warm.

Founder Nichola Mable has been kept “super busy” in her mission to provide warmth for Bankies this Christmas.

She said: “It’s about trying to teach people that the smallest things can make the biggest difference in their lives.”

Mum Nichola highlighted that many of the volunteers are also parents who have experienced having to “save money at some point”.

She said: “None of us are rich and it’s about sharing the tips we know to help others.”

The charity has several other initiatives which aim to educate the community on ways to make daily living more comfortable.

Workshops on basic DIY have gone down a treat as it saves on the cost of having to hire a professional labourer - with the charity even lending out toolkits.

Basic sewing skills are encouraged - giving locals the knowledge to upcycle and mend existing household items.

Nichola added: “We don’t ask for anything new from anyone and never have.

“We don’t want people to buy us stuff. All we want is for people to keep us in mind when they’re cleaning out their cupboards.”

The charity moved in to a unit at the Clyde Street Business Centre in May, having been forced to seek out a new base after its previous home - at The Hub in Kilbowie Road - closed at the start of the pandemic and was later used as a Covid testing station.

Nichola told the Post she has been “trying for years” to get local politicians to back the scheme.

MSP Neil Bibby recently visited the hub and hailed the work of volunteers as “fantastic”.

He said: “This is a wonderful community initiative. The fact that thousands of people use this service every month and come, not just from the Clydebank area, but all over Scotland is testament to the exceptional work of the Recycle Room.”

The West Scotland Labour MSP joined his party colleague, Councillor Danny Lennie, on a visit to the group’s HQ.

Cllr Lennie said: “It was a privilege to be invited to The Recycle Room and see the great work they do in supporting our communities in these times. It was a real humbling experience.”
