A CLYDEBANK charity is raising funds for a “real life action man” who is paralysed from the neck down.

Danny Mavor, 36, was left wheelchair bound following a horror crash while travelling along the East Lothian coastline in 2019.

Golden Friendships founder Jim McLaren described Danny as “a remarkable person”, adding: “He was in the army for years and travelled all over the world. He’s an adrenaline junkie.”

Jim’s friend at the club, made him aware of Danny’s story and Jim knew he had to lend a helping hand.

The former soldier is determined to break a new world record for the fastest journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End in an electric wheelchair - powered only by his chin.

The veteran will be accompanied on the journey by a support team called the DMC - Danny Mavor Challenge - which is expected to take 15-18 days.

To take on the challenge, Danny needs a specialist wheelchair designed and custom built, with Jim in talks with Clydebank’s Glenhead Engineering and experts at the University of Glasgow.

Helping with the fund-raising effort, Jim organised a dinner at Golden Friendships on Sunday and sold 15 tables priced at £500 in just three days, with guests enjoying dinner, an auction and live entertainment.

The event attracted well-wishers from all over the UK including Danny’s former army colleagues, friends and family.

The first fundraiser brought in a whopping £11,335 with another night on the cards on February 5.

Jim hailed the reaction as “amazing”, with scores of people keen to get involved and make a donation.

The determined man is the youngest person being looked after by the Erskine charity for former service personnel, and requires 24/7 care.

There’s currently a cottage available for Danny on the grounds, but challenges surrounding care arrangements have delayed him moving in.

A GoFundMe page has been launched, with the fund-raiser currently sitting at £5,800 towards its £30,000 target.

Following Sunday’s fund-raiser Danny said in a ‘thank you’ post on Facebook: “The support was unreal from everyone – very humbling as I was worried nobody would turn up.

“Some of the bidding for items was mental, and raising nearly 11 grand in one night is a testament to how superb you people are.”
