A MUCH-loved north-west Glasgow priest has died. 

The Archdiocese of Glasgow announced that Monsignor Peter Smith has passed away, aged 62. 

Mr Smith was the former chancellor of the Archdiocese and parish priest of St Paul’s in Whiteinch.

A post on Facebook read: "With great sorrow, we announce the death after a long illness of Mgr Peter Smith, former chancellor of the Archdiocese and PP of St Paul’s Whiteinch.

"Funeral arrangements in due course. Mgr Peter who was 62, was a much-loved priest well known and respected for his service across the Church in Scotland.

"He was a fine Canon lawyer and devoted pastor. Requiescat in pace"

Hundreds of people have paid tribute. 

One person wrote: "RIP to a wonderful priest, lovely memories of a very humble and lovely man. He was the parish priest who officiated at my son's First Holy Communion in St Augustine's. Fly with the angel's Father Peter." 

Someone said: "I am so saddened by this news. I was very fond of Monsignor Smith. May he rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time."

Another added: "Sorry to hear as he was involved in my god-daughter, Mychaella’s First Communion in St Paul’s in 2019, which took place just with her and one other child! She had a great love and respect for him."
