A DRUMCHAPEL man tried to collect a boy from primary school on his motorbike while high on drugs.

Thomas Egan had earlier dropped the eight-year-old off at the school in the north-west of Glasgow on October 16, 2020.

The 44-year-old had been spotted unsteady on his feet and the school’s head teacher contacted the police.

Officers arrested Egan when he came to collect the boy on the bike at the end of the day.

He was found to have 79 etizolam tablets - known as 'street Valium' - in his possession.

Egan pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to two separate charges of driving a vehicle while unfit to do so.

He also admitted possession of a controlled drug.

The court heard the head teacher received three reports about Egan driving the motorbike while under the influence of drugs.

Prosecutor Jennifer Gilmour said: “Egan dropped the boy off at the school.

“The police were told school would finish at 2.30pm that day and he would be expected to turn up.

“Police attended at 2.20pm and they saw Egan driving the vehicle, park it and enter the school grounds.

“He was stumbling on his feet and appeared drowsy.”

Officers stopped Egan and searched him before finding the tablets.

The court was also told of an occasion 10 days later in which Egan was spotted stumbling after coming off the motorbike near his home.

Officers arrived and subjected him to a medical examination, which found that he was impaired by a “drug or alcohol substance”.

Ian Sievwright, defending, told the court Egan has previous driving convictions.

Sheriff Allan Findlay tagged Egan, of Drumchapel, for six months, keeping him indoors between 7pm and 7am.

He was also put under social work supervision for one year and disqualified from driving until 2025.
