AN ENTERPRISING Whitecrook youngster has decided to spend his summer holidays raising money for charity by selling lemonade.

Six-year-old Charlie Maguire was inspired to build his own lemonade stand from leftover wooden waste in his garden.

He knew he wanted to raise money for charity so opened the doors to the public beside his house on the Forth and Clyde Canal.

His mum Stacey told the Post: “We had a few pallets in the garden. Charlie is quite crafty and likes to build things and he knew he wanted to make something with them.

“We decided on building a lemonade stand.

“It was more to just have it in the garden at first, so if his friends were over he could serve them drinks and to play with.

“I jokingly said that we should take it on the canal as there are probably loads on people who would love a glass of lemonade whilst out walking.”

After contacting the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity to get their permission to raise funds on their behalf, Charlie received some decorations for his stall and a T-shirt.

The 32-year-old added: “It was such a kind gesture. He has been doing really great with it. He has been out the past few weeks. We have been selling cakes and fruit juices for the children walking past.”

Charlie describes how people going down the canal in boats were encouraging him.

He said: “We saw the boats going down the canal. One gave us a coin for the stand.

“I really like making things for the lemonade stand. I think we might make sponge cake with icing and sprinkles next.”

At the end of July Stacey and Charlie will be donating all money raised to the children’s charity.

She added: “He doesn’t even know how well he is doing. We are all so proud of him. We are going to wait until the end to see how much we have raised.”

Charlie will be selling lemonade and sweet goodies on the canal path near the Duntreath Avenue flyover every Saturday during the holidays from 10.30am until 1pm.
