A “CARING and loving” Drumry couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last week.

Herbert McFadzean met Edith Hedges at the Radnor Park Hotel whilst she was working as a barmaid – and as soon as he set eyes on the young woman, he knew that she was the one for him.

Edith went on to work as a civil servant in the Scottish Office whilst Herbert was a sheet iron worker.

The couple married at Anniesland Parish Church on June 19, 1971 and went on to have three daughters - Jacqueline, 48, Gayle, 45 and Lindsay, aged 39.

Their daughter Gayle shared her favourite memories of her childhood with her parents.

She told the Post: “My dad was born and bred in Clydebank while my mum was brought up in Partick.

“For as long as we have known them they have always been on the go.

“My mum always got us to dancing and gymnastics classes even after her work, while my dad has always been hard-working just to give the best for our family.

“Our first holiday abroad was to Benidorm which was great fun for any 11-year-old.”

Now, Herbert and Edith enjoy their retirement in their home in Drumry spending time with their five grandchildren – Hayley, 26, Evan, 18, Elise, 12, Millie, 8 and two-year-old Ella.

Gayle said: “My mum likes to go out with her friends the ‘Golden Girls’ and my dad is a bit of a blether and never fails to meet anyone on his walks. They also love to do a bit in the garden.

“They had a surprise garden party at my sister’s house. They had lots of nice balloons, a barbecue and a few cocktails to celebrate their day.

“From the whole family, we would like to wish them a very happy 50th wedding anniversary. We would also like to say a huge thank you for everything you have done for us.”

The happy couple marked the special day by taking Gayle’s gran out for a meal and a weekend outing with her friends.
