Pupils from two local primary schools cut the ribbon to officially open a brand new community orchard in Drumry.

Youngsters from Linnvale and St Eunan’s were given the job of opening the new garden in the area’s Linear Park.

Located beside the Titan BMX park, the project was funded through West Dunbartonshire Council’s Your Community team and the Environment Trust.

John Hainey, chair of Drumry and Linnvale Community Council, said: “I want to thank the Your Community team for all of their hard work. I also can’t thank the Environment Trust enough.

“By next year we will have pear, cherry and mainly apples which belong to the community.

“I want the community to look after this orchard with hopes of being able to extend it.”

Pupils from the two primary schools have been involved in the whole process, which began in 2019 – from the look of the community orchard itself, right through to the design of the shiny new placard which welcomes people to the area.

The orchard boasts 43 trees of different fruits.

It is hoped that children who attend schools in the local area can use the garden for educational purposes.

Gavin Lawson from North and South Drumry Tenants and Residents Association told the Post: “This will greatly improve the area and has been a long time in the making.

“I hope it will encourage the children to learn more about nature.”
