A LOCAL community council member has said that laziness and ignorance are to blame for the area's litter problem.

The claim comes after new photos revealed mounds of rubbish piling up along the canal.

Local Stuart Gray and Linnvale Community Group have been playing their part in tidying up the area, but insist more must be done to teach people on the importance of binning rubbish.

Linnvale member Stuart told the Post: "People don't seem to appreciate the harmful effect on wildlife and the environment.

"Polystyrene breaks up and it goes into the water, and eventually into the sea and causes havoc.

"Local fast food outlets are good at supplying plastic or polystyrene shells and not using biodegradable options, this needs looked at.

"Fly tipping is another factor. Councils have policies of hiring contractors to dump rubbish which leads to fly tipping.

"The general public need to have a responsibility for the environment. Parents need this onto their children and get involved in cleaning."

And the new community group have banded together to go on regular cleans of the local area, and are asking for residents to get involved.

He continued: "Linnvale Community Group has only been in operation for five months, but we've hit the ground running.

"We've developed links with WDC, Scottish Canal, Sustrans and Clydebank Kayak Club among others.

"We're in the process of deep cleaning the canal, and it's our intention to regularly go out and do quick litter picks.

"Quite a number of people have stopped as we clean and have offered their services, which is wonderful.
