CLYDEBANK’S John McGinn has been named as the Scottish Football Writers’ Association International Player of the Year.

The lucrative award went to the Bankie after a monumental season for the player at Aston Villa and with the Scottish national side.

The award for John came before today’s announcement that he will also be a part of the first Scotland squad in 23 years to be announced for an international tournament.

McGinn told the Scottish Sun: “It’s not until you win this award and take a step back that you think of the number of players who could have received it.

“You’re the one who’s been chosen and that’s a brilliant feeling.”

At this year’s Euro 2021 competition, Steve Clarke’s side will take on Czech Republic and Croatia in Glasgow, as well as heading down to London to play arch-rivals England at Wembley.

Clydebank’s McGinn played an important part in getting Scotland to the competition, scoring seven goals as well as getting two assists and captaining his side.

And McGinn, who was the third Bankie ever to be named as Scotland captain, is all set to play an important part in the team once again.

Speaking to The Scotsman, the midfielder said: “Everyone knows how passionate I am about playing for Scotland and it is such an exciting time to be involved.

“Hopefully, we can do ourselves justice.”

Euro 2021 will kick on Friday, June 11, when Turkey face off against Italy in Rome.
