A NEW Lidl supermarket could be on the way to Clydebank – if councillors give the go-ahead to the sale of a site in the town.

The infrastructure, regeneration and economic development committee of West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) to approve the sale of the park and ride site next to the Kilbowie roundabout to the German-owned company for at least £1 million.

Lidl’s Clydebank Retail Park store closed in 2019, months after the firm opened a new supermarket on Mill Road in Yoker.

The report, for a meeting on May 12, says the sale would have a “headline price” of £1.6m, but that after the any “abnormal site costs” – which the report says would be capped at £600,000 – the council would be better off by at least £1m.

In the report, chief officer Angela Wilson says: “The site was not marketed for sale and the current use is designated as a Park and Ride facility but is not well utilised.

“Lidl approached the council about the possibility of acquiring the site for the development of a foodstore, with associated car parking.

“Although the site was not marketed for sale, consultation took place with Roads and Neigbourhood to ascertain whether they were amenable to the disposal. They had no issues due to the under utilisation but that an area should be retained for sustainable travel.”

The park and ride facility was funded by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). It opened in 2009, but within weeks was being branded a “white elephant” by residents who said hardly anyone was using it.
