Prince Philip will be fondly remembered by many Bankes with the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth visiting the area back over the years.

Tributes poured in to commemorate the life of the Duke after his passing on April 9, and we took a trip back down memory lane to uncover photographs from the Queen and Prince Philip's visit to Clydebank to officially open the West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre at the Golden Jubilee National Hospitain in July 2008.

Both Prince Philip and the Queen took the time to speak to the youngsters before enjoying a tour round the facility and speaking to the many staff and patients who could not wait to meet them.

Before that visit, Prince Philip arrived at Clydebank's Rothesay Dock aboard Britannia on June 28, 1965, for a whirlwind tour which included a visit to the Singer Sewing Machine Factory - and returned two years later for the launch of the QE2.

Clydebank Post:

In 2012, Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee year, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh paid a return visit to St Margaret's of Scotland Hospice before continuing to Our Holy Redeemer's Primary, where the couple enjoyed lunch in a specially-provided marquee.

The Duke was the longest-serving consort in British history, having been married to the Queen for more than 70 years.

Clydebank Post:

He dedicated decades of his life to royal duty, serving the nation at the monarch’s side before officially retiring from public engagements in the summer of 2017.

Earlier this year Prince Philip underwent a successful heart operation before returning to Windsor Castle.

He was born on June 10, 1921 on the Greek island of Corfu, and died peacefully on April 9, 2021.
