A MAN has appeared in court charged with murdering his wife in Drumchapel three years ago.

Peter Maher, 59, is charged with attacking Jeanna Maher at a property in Dewar Drive on September 26, 2018.

The accusation features allegations he bound the ankles and wrists of the 51-year-old Asda supermarket worker with ligatures as well as repeatedly striking her with a mallet or similar item.

Mr Maher, who appeared via video link, is also charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice after the alleged killing.

This includes a claim that he cleaned blood at the house and changed his clothes.

He is further accused of assaulting his wife on various occasions between January 2012 until the day before the alleged killing.

The charge states – amongst several claims – that he punched her as well as threw a mobile phone and remote control at her.

Iain McSporran QC, defending, pleaded not guilty on his behalf during a short hearing at the High Court in Glasgow today.

Lady Stacey did not set a trial and the case was instead adjourned until June.
