AN INSPIRATIONAL young Clydebank Girl Guide member has been recognised for her outstanding commitment to her Brownie group and fund-raising efforts after losing her dad to cancer in 2019.

Courtney Devenney, a member of the 1st Clydebank Brownie unit, found comfort and support in her Brownie group and continued to work through restrictions of lockdown, enjoying online Brownie activities and completing interest badges at home.

In memory of her late dad, Courtney earned her Charities badge and completed a sponsored dance in June on the first anniversary of his death.

The inspirational youngster raised nearly £1,000 for The Beatson, who had looked after her dad.

She also gained her bronze, silver and gold Brownie awards after earning over 40 badges and even made a video aimed at helping younger Guiding members transition to the Brownie section.

Morven Hinson, County Commissioner for Girlguiding Dunbartonshire, honoured nine-year-old Courtney Devenney with the Napier Award after sharing her story with her Dunbartonshire county colleagues – who, unsurprisingly, all agreed she was a worthy recipient.

In a socially distanced ceremony, the trophy was presented by her unit leader over the garden wall.

Commenting on how guiding has helped her through this difficult time, nine-year-old Courtney said: “I have loved doing all my Brownie work and earning all my badges.

“It has helped me build my confidence and I have learned a lot of new skills.”

The 1st Clydebank Brownie group leader, Linda Jain said: “We’re all very proud of Courtney. She is such an inspiration and we’re so glad that guiding has been able to help her during this difficult time, especially during lockdown.

“At a time when so many people have been affected, she has been a shining light, making every week worthwhile to see what she is going to be up to next.

“Courtney has helped and encouraged others with activities to continue as Brownies. She is just a star.”

Courtney’s mum, Kellyanne Devenney, added: “I am extremely proud of Courtney.

“She is an inspirational little girl and she has come on leaps with the help of her Brownie leaders, Linda and Elizabeth, and her confidence shines out of her now.”
