Clydebank will be one of the first towns in Scotland to receive 5G data.

EE has switched on 5G coverage in eight towns and cities – including Clydebank – across Scotland allowing more customers to receive the latest mobile network technology.

The eight places join more than 30 new towns and cities, since May, across the UK that can now access 5G from the mobile company.

It also brings the total number of places across Scotland connected to 5G on the company’s network to 10.

Gil Paterson, MSP for Clydebank said: “The 5G revolution presents a significant opportunity for us in the years ahead, and seizing such opportunities is particularly important as we look to build the economic recovery following the lockdown required to suppress the COVID-19 virus.

“The Scottish Government’s investment of £4million through the S5GConnect programme will enhance and widen digital connectivity in all parts of the country because we believe that it is through deploying next-generation technologies that we can create something special for businesses, families and communities.

“So with the pandemic adversely affecting most businesses and indeed people, the more we can do to assist a recovery the better it will be, and 5G I hope helps businesses cope with the Covid consequences.”

Other locations include Aberdeen, Barrhead, Stirling, Bellshill, Cumbernauld, Paisley and Motherwell.

Alan Lees, BT’s enterprise unit Scotland director, said: “The arrival of 5G in more places in the region will make sure it’s ahead of the game in terms of connectivity and competitiveness.”
