THE head teacher at a primary school in Clydebank has denied withholding information from parents over a confirmed case of coronavirus.

A pupil at St Eunan’s Primary tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday, September 2.

But in a letter to parents, head teacher Anne Docherty states that “negative comments” on social media are "unhelpful" in the current climate.

Mrs Docherty's letter states: “I write in response to conversations on Facebook regarding the case of coronavirus in St Eunan’s.

“The suggestion that the school withheld information from parents is not true and negative comments such as this are unhelpful, particularly in this climate.

“Your child’s safety and that of all adults in the building, is paramount, it is our top priority.”

The head teacher went on to give a timeline of events, stating that the pupil was tested at mid-day on Wednesday, September 2, and that she was informed of the positive result at 11.45am the following day.

She went on to say: “Within 15 minutes the director of education and Public Health Scotland had been informed, at which point I was told that someone would get back to me to discuss the process.

“At around 1.30pm, a doctor from Public Health contacted me, and on the back of that 20-minute conversation, a spreadsheet was sent for completion along with copies of two letters sent out yesterday.

“The necessary information was returned to public health at 2.15pm and letters were personalised and ready to be delivered to classes at 2.50pm.”

In the letter Mrs Docherty also praised the work of the school’s clerical staff.

She added: “We are following Scottish Government guidance to the letter and given the nature of the situation, due to the hard work and commitment of clerical staff, I actually think we did really well in getting the information to parents by 3pm.”

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said: “The health and wellbeing of our pupils is our priority and we continue to follow public health and the Scottish Government guidance to provide a safe environment within all our schools.”

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the latest information on Covid-19 cases in the area's schools would be provided in its daily update later on Friday but declined to comment further.
