A NEW community radio station is helping to keep residents in Dumbarton and the Vale entertained during lockdown.

Best friends Alan Caldwell and Paul Lucas, both from Bonhill, set up Leven Lockdown Radio to fill a gap they spotted for local radio in the area due to increased isolation.

And it has proved to be a hit, so the duo are planning to keep it as a permanent fixture with a brand new name chosen by the public – River Radio.

Alan said he got the idea after playing tunes during a weekly bingo game with his family via Zoom – but admitted he was surprised how well it’s been received.

He told the Reporter: “In such a short period of time we have got a fully grown radio station with a variety of presenters and shows.

“Within a few weeks we had people contact us with suggestions, positive comments about the shows and offers of help.”

The co-founders agreed that featuring local bands and artists was an important aim for the show during lockdown.

Alan said: “We want it to be totally community focused. There is so much talent out there that can’t perform.”

Presenters so far include Jim Smart, a Freddie Mercury tribute, a Christian-themed Rise and Shine show with the Rev Jack Dunion, and a wellbeing show hosted by Emily Fraser, helping people struggling with the effects of the lockdown.

The show has been self-funded from the men to help bring the community together.

Alan said: “It was all about having fun and giving something back.

“We are really keen to get more local people involved and get people talking about the things that are important to them.”

“We always ask the presenters what they want to do and we always put ideas out on social media for the public to decide so they have a say for their community radio.”
