The Vale of Leven Hospital is again providing births at the Community Maternity Unit and reinstating the home birth service.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) said midwifery staff are now in place to deliver a safe service for women giving birth.

The health board has also introduced additional risk assessments in response to Covid-19 to keep patients and staff safe while delivering home births.

This includes practical measures such as ensuring appropriate PPE, reducing the number of people in the room, and maintaining infection control procedures.

Plans are in place to reintroduce all midwife-led birthing options across Greater Glasgow and Clyde on a phased basis, as recommended by the Scottish Government.

This is anticipated to be later this month depending on adequate staffing to ensure safety for patients.

Kevin Hill, director of women and children’s services, NHSGGC, said: “We are really pleased to start offering midwife led birthing options in the Vale of Leven. We want to thank everyone for their patience as we have adapted our services to respond to Covid-19.

“With huge thanks to our midwifery team, we’re now able to offer home births safely again.

“We encourage women to speak to their midwife if they would like more details.”
