LOCAL politicians are backing calls for Boris Johnson to sack Dominic Cummings.

Earlier today, the Post reported that Clydebank’s MSP, Gil Paterson, joined calls for Mr Cummings to resign, after it emerged that he broke multiple lockdown rules to drive 260 miles from his home in London to another home in Durham.

But now, Martin Docherty-Hughes, West Dunbartonshire’s MP, and Bill Kidd, MSP for Anniesland, have called for the senior advisor to be sacked.

Mr Docherty-Hughes said: “The Prime Minister must sack Mr Cummings without further delay.

"People are understandably questioning Boris Johnson's judgement on this. The fact that there has been a Downing Street cover-up, with the public kept in the dark for eight weeks until newspapers uncovered the story, makes it even worse.

"Questions over the Tory cover-up will only grow unless credible answers are provided, which is why the SNP has called for an urgent Cabinet Office inquiry.”

More than 400,000 people have signed a petition calling for Mr Cummings to go, hundreds of constituents have contacted MPs with their concerns, and YouGov polling shows a majority think Mr Cummings should resign.

Meanwhile, Durham Police have confirmed a fresh investigation into Mr Cummings after further allegations of rule-breaking emerged.

Bill Kidd MSP added: “Mr Cummings should have resigned but instead he showed no contrition and refused to say sorry for his behaviour which has left millions of people - who have been sticking to the rules - justifiably furious.

“Cummings’ double standards are breath taking. His convoluted excuses to justify his inexcusable behaviour were frankly insulting to the people of the whole of this island.

“The Prime Minister has no option but to sack Mr Cummings. His failure to do so by now is a failure of leadership that could have a catastrophic effect on how coronavirus is contained.

“Boris Johnson has apparently known about this for weeks, has failed to offer any answers himself and now has no option but to sack Dominic Cummings and answer questions about his own role in the Downing Street cover-up.

"Leading public health experts have warned this failure of leadership is damaging the public health message and putting lives at risk.

"The longer the Prime Minister allows this farce to continue the more the Tory government will lose credibility and respect. He must sack Mr Cummings without further delay."
