VITAL personal protective equipment (PPE) held by West College Scotland at its campuses in Clydebank and elsewhere is now being used to protect those on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.

More than 28,000 items of PPE – face masks, gloves and sanitiser – have been donated to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde after the college made a collective effort to identify the products across its three campuses.

The college, which holds stock for its own training and hygiene purposes, did not hesitate when approached by the NHS for help.

PPE kit was situated in different areas across campus buildings, so required some effort on the part of many colleagues, to locate it and go in and collect it – all while observing social distancing rules.

A total of 1,301 face masks, 24,700 pairs of gloves and 172 bottles of sanitiser were handed over for use by NHS staff.

Elaine Gray, purchasing lead for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), said: “I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of NHSGGC to thank West College Scotland (WCS) for the donation of PPE consumables.

“In this current climate, our organisation is continually sourcing products to ensure that NHS staff has the maximum protection. Please be assured that we have provided items to many members of staff, so far.”

David Alexander, vice principal of operations at WCS, who co-ordinated the effort, added: “The whole college should be very proud of what we have achieved as a community.

“In particular, I want to thank everyone involved for their help in getting this kit distributed – it was truly a cross college effort, with PPE kit being donated by all areas.”
