A DRUG dealer is facing the prospect of a jail sentence after police carried out a raid on a flat in Clydebank.

Edward Johnstone’s home in Lennox View was searched last year after emergency services rushed to a report of an unresponsive woman at the address.

On arriving at the scene on September 19, shortly after an ambulance crew, police immediately noticed a strong smell of cannabis inside the house.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard last week that 441 grams of the class B drug were found after the property was searched.

Johnstone appeared in the dock on February 25 after pleading guilty to a charge of possession with intent to supply.

Alasdair Millar, prosecuting, said the value of the drug was somewhere between £2,000 and £4,400, depending on how it was sub-divided.

Mr Millar added: “There was a tick list found, and other assorted paraphernalia, including bags.

“But the key reason for the Crown proceeding with a charge of possession with intent to supply is simply the weight of the drug, which was far in excess of what one would have for personal consumption.”

But the court heard a report was not available and that Johnstone, now living in Cumbrae Crescent South in Dumbarton, had failed to keep two appointments with a social worker.

Johnstone’s solicitor, David Gallagher, told the court his client accepted full responsibility for the offence.

“This incident has served as something of a wake-up call to him,” Mr Gallagher said.

The solicitor said the drug had not been supplied to the unresponsive woman – who, he said, was Johnstone’s best friend.

Sheriff William Gallacher told Johnstone: “You have no previous convictions for being involved in the supply of drugs, and following your last conviction you were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

“I’m not at all convinced that any report will persuade me I can deal with you by anything other than custody.

“If you don’t turn up for a report on the next occasion I’ll remand you in custody.”

Sentence was further deferred until March 20.
