Clydebank Disability Futsal Club welcomed the return of their Thursday Night League last week with a top night of action at Drumchapel High School.

Expanding the league from four teams and 28 players to six teams and 42 players, local sides from Clydebank and Drumchapel were joined by Glasgow Blue, Glasgow Green and new teams Vale of Leven and Dumbarton.

Futsal is a variant of five-a-side or seven-a-side football played indoors on a hard court with both smaller goals and a smaller ball.

The league will run for 10 weeks with matches played at Drumchapel High School every Thursday from 6pm to 9pm.

The Clydebank team opened their campaign with an exciting 7-5 win over Glasgow Green, battling back from a goal down early on before holding their nerve to secure a well-deserved three points.

Drumchapel, meanwhile, had to settle for an opening night point after an enthralling 6-6 draw against Glasgow Blue.

Support worker and Disability Futsal Club founder Jason Methven said: “The opening night was really good. We had two brand new teams and plenty of exciting matches with loads of goals to get us underway.

“I think this kind of league and set up is vital for the community. The league has been running for three years but we’ve expanded this year.

“It meets the psychological, social, emotional and physical needs of all the players and it’s a great way for them to get out of the house and get some exercise while catching up with their pals.

“Before this, there were only events every few months but I wanted to set up a league where the guys could play and see their friends weekly.

“Futsal is a lot more compacted than football so the benefits for the players are balance, coordination and confidence.

“The players are also organising, coaching and running the majority of it themselves now. That’s massive for their confidence too.

“We’re always on the lookout for new players, so anyone interested in giving futsal a try or coming along should get in touch via Facebook.”
