THE community greenspace currently under construction at the former St Eunan’s Primary School now has an official name.

Melfort Park – which ties in with the Melfort Avenue access road – was the name approved at a West Dunbartonshire Council planning committee meeting last week.

It followed “extensive” community consultation and a request for suggested names that referenced the area’s history and heritage.

The £1.3million project is being delivered by the council’s regeneration team and once complete, will include new biodiversity areas, raised bed allotments, outdoor exercise equipment, play areas for children and areas for outdoor education.

Councillor Jim Finn, convener of the committee, said: “Melfort Park has been created to benefit local residents and give them a community space to enjoy, so I am pleased they were consulted over the area’s new name.”

Open pathways will be created through the site, providing accessible connections for pedestrians and cyclists between the town centre to the south, and residential areas to the north of the site.

Cllr Diane Docherty, vice convener of the committee, added: “This will be a great park when it is completed.

“I am pleased to see our community have been asked to be involved in this project including our school children, who will be able to visit the site through a planning initiative and gain an insight into the planning process.”

The project was awarded £375,000 as part of a £37.5m Scottish programme of projects to improve the urban environment of Scotland.
