A CLYDEBANK mum whose final wish was to have one more Christmas with her young family sadly passed away two days before it could happen.

Ashley Meehan, 31, was given six months to live in September, following a tough battle with cervical cancer.

The former nursery teacher and mum-of-five was laid to rest on January 6 after she passed away at her home on December 23.

Peter Potts, Ashley’s fiancé, said: “She was my soulmate, my everything, love at first sight and she was the person I was meant to be with for the rest of my life.

“Life is so cruel and so unfair. She never gave up and was so brave and fought to the end for her babies.

“I promised to look after her forever and I felt helpless that I couldn’t do anything to help her.”

Peter proposed to Ashley while she was in hospital in June 2019 – on the 12th anniversary of meeting each other.

Their youngest daughter Zara, aged two, wore an outfit reading: “Mummy will you marry daddy?”

A video of the proposal was viewed more than 3.4million times on Facebook.

Ashley’s best friend Becky Garrett said her heart is “shattered” following the sad news.

She posted on her social media: “You got the send-off you deserved my girl, the amount of people that were there shows just how loved you are and always will be.

“I know you would be proud of how strong your family were and, in particular, Peter and the kids, who were just incredible.

“You really had a heart of gold and were always protective of me...even lately when you were going through all that you were, you were always more interested in seeing how I was and making sure I was okay.

“Benji and I will miss you more than anyone could ever imagine and you will always be in my thoughts and heart forever. Thank you for being you, it is a true privilege to be able to call you my best friend.”

A gofundme page set up, and regularly updated by Becky, to help Ashley and her family make their last memories together raised more than £7,900.

Part of the funds allowed them to go on a trip to Blackpool as their dream holiday abroad was not possible.

Becky’s last update read: “Thank you to all those who were generous enough to donate to Ashley’s gofundme.

“Although she didn’t get to fulfil some of her wishes, your money helped towards making memories with her children and having quality time with those she loved and I know she was beyond grateful for every single bit of help she received.”
