A MUM whose lies caused a high court trial to collapse has been jailed for 18 months.

Cherie Doyle, 24, was a vital prosecution witness in the case of a man blinded after being attacked in his home.

Steven Dolan had been accused of assaulting Stewart White with a baseball bat to his severe injury as well as to his permanent disfigurement and impairment.

Mr White was partially sighted before the incident at a property in Gorget Avenue, Knightswood, days before Christmas last year.

Doyle had been called to give evidence – but prosecutors dropped the charge against Mr Dolan after her testimony.

Doyle ended up in the dock herself for contempt of court and was today locked up by judge Lady Rae.

She said Mr White had been deprived of an “opportunity to obtain justice”.

Lady Rae told Doyle: “You were an uncooperative witness who told lie after lie.

“You denied your police statement and accused officers of being 'bent', as you put it.

“It is apparent you were not taking the matter seriously. I observed that you were smiling or smirking.

“You repeatedly changed your evidence despite warnings by me.”

The judge said the maximum sentence could have been two years in jail.

She added Doyle was “fortunate” she was not being prosecuted for the more serious offence of perjury.

As Doyle was lead to the cells, a woman shouted: “If something happens to that lassie, I will hold you responsible.”

The hearing earlier heard claims Doyle had been “fearful” of Steven Dolan and his associates.

But Lady Rae said Doyle “gave no impression” of being concerned.
