YOUNGSTERS from primary schools across Clydebank took part in a recent competition in a bid to grab a place at a grand final.

West Dunbartonshire Leisure Sports Development team hosted the first Sportshall Athletics heat on Thursday, October 3 in Clydebank Leisure Centre.

More than 200 pupils from St Mary’s (Duntocher), Gavinburn, St Joseph’s, Our Lady of Loretto, St Eunan’s, St Stephen’s and Our Holy Redeemer pupils all took part.

The young athletes competed in an array of relays and field events including javelin, chest push, standing long jump, standing triple jump and speed bounce.

St Mary’s Primary were crowned champions of the first heat with 234 points.

The runner’s up position was a close contest between Gavinburn and St Joseph’s.

But Gavinburn managed to secure enough points in the final relays of the event to claim second place with 182 points.

And St Joseph’s finished third with 172 points, just ten behind.

The grand final event in April 2020 is made up of the top two placed schools from four heats plus the top two third placed schools.
