VANDALS who are targeting a cemetery in Clydebank have graffitied the word “DEAD” on a sign near the entrance.

Families going to visit their loved one’s graves at North Dalnottar Cemetery have hit out at those spoiling their time.

As well as the word DEAD, the vandals have spray painted “GRAVE ROBBERS RIP” across one of the buildings.

And there have been reports of “IRA” painted across a pavement.

One reader, who asked not to be named, was outraged.

The man told the Post: "It's disgraceful. I have been visiting this graveyard for more than 20 years - there's never been any vandalism in here and all of a sudden, this has happened.

"There were other instances of spray paint on the waiting rooms but that's been cleaned now. It's been a lovely cemetery.

"I would not want reprisals from these... I would not even call them human beings."

Police Scotland said vandalism at the cemetery was first reported six weeks ago.

However, it is believed the most recent accounts happened over the weekend.

There was also anger expressed on social media.

One person said: “Just back from Dalnottar and feeling extremely sad and angry that some folk think it’s okay to vandalise the graveyard.

“It shows that whoever is doing this clearly wants to upset the families visiting. Horrible thing to do.”

“I saw them cleaning it off just for the twats to come back and do it again. Sometimes it’s hard enough to go up to visit without seeing signs like that.”

A spokeswoman for West Dunbartonshire Council said: "We are extremely disappointed by this mindless vandalism which causes distress to families visiting their loved ones."

They added that it is now being investigated by Police Scotland and would encourage anyone with information to contact 101.

Councillor Douglas McAllister told the Post he was "utterly appalled" by the "disgusting act of vandalism" that's took place within his ward.

He added: "It must be incredibly upsetting for bereaved families visiting the cemetery to see this.

"Is nothing sacred? I can only presume these vandals are young and haven't suffered a loss of a loved one. I cannot contemplate what possible motive they would have for targeting the cemetery with such upsetting graffiti.

"My message to the culprits is please reflect on your actions and stop this. I would also like to thank our council staff for their efforts in cleaning this mess up."
