CARE staff threw a party for a resident who celebrated a very special birthday last week when she turned 106.

Barbara Semple, who lives in Almond View Care Home in Drumchapel, was born on July 11, 1913, in Birkenhead, England, and moved to Partick when she was aged five.

The proud 106-year-old has lived in the Drumchapel care home since May 1 this year, and had lived in Knightswood before moving.

Barbara was known to care staff before she moved in, as she was “constantly” visiting her sister Carrie, who stayed in the very room Barbara does now before she passed away in 2006, aged 100.

In her younger years Barbara loved to dance the waltz and foxtrot, sew and knit. She started working at the age of 14 in a factory office making hair rope in Finnieston before it closed down and she became a message girl for the Hair Factory.

She now loves to watch murder mysteries, romance movies – and to sleep.

Despite never marrying or having kids, Barbara is close to her family, especially her cousin Elizabeth.

Jodi Donachie, activities coordinator at Almond View, told the Post: “Barbara’s birthday party was a great success. She loved it, she was so surprised but loved it all, and had loads of nibbles and some non-alcoholic wine.

“All the staff love Barbara, she’s a right comedian and always has a laugh.”
