Since 2014 the first time pass rate in Scotland has steadily increased, from 51.8 per cent in 2014 to 53.7 per cent in 2018.

And Scotland is one of only three regions in the UK to have seen a continuous increase in pass rates, with London and the north east of England being the other two.

Matt Oliver, car insurance expert at GoCompare, said :“If you’ve recently passed your test, you’re deemed a greater risk to insurers, due to your inexperience on the road.

“Among other factors, such as the car you drive, the class of use and where you live, your insurer will also calculate your premium on how likely you are to be involved in an accident and make a claim.”
