PUPILS from a Clydebank high school have won prize money at a competition to kickstart their very own idea.

A team from St Peter the Apostle High School were crowned runners-up at the Incredible Innovations Competition organised by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) west, West College Scotland and Morrison Construction.

The competition, which was held at the end of last month, offers pupils from across West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde the opportunity to showcase their talents by pitching ideas to a judge’s panel.

A homework planner app was the team from St Peter the Apostle’s idea. Instead of using a physical paper-based homework diary, they would develop an app without the cost and environmental expense of printing the diaries.

The pupils did market research and found that not many of the pupils in the school used their paper-based diary, but that most would be willing to try their app

Prize money of £500 will now go towards kickstarting their idea, which will also reduce the schools paper usage.

Bob Davidson, DYW west director, said: “Everything that the pupils have done to reach the finals will help them prepare for life after school – working as a team, conducting research, managing budgets, public speaking and much more – all skills employers want.

‘‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the schools, pupils and teachers that entered and congratulations to the winners, runners up and all that reached the final.”

A team from Notre Dame High School won first place at the competition with their eco-friendly, reusable water bottle idea, winning £1,000 prize money.

Jim Johnstone, Morrison Construction economic performance manager, added: ‘‘It was fantastic to be part of the competition since its inception in August last year, travelling to schools and meeting the pupils and teachers involved.

‘‘I would like to congratulate the finalist teams on their high-quality presentations, you made the judging panels task very difficult.’’
