Nearly 1000 Orange Order members plan to march past an East End church where a priest was attacked as part of a newly-announced summer parade.

A notification lodged by the County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow states that a procession on Saturday, June 8, will take around 950 Glasgow Orange Order members past St Alphonsus' Church on London Road.

Canon Tom White, the parish priest at St Alphonsus', as well as St Mary's in Calton, was spat on and attacked by a follower of the annual Boyne parade last July.

On that occasion, around 200 members were passing the church.

Starting in Corn Street at 11am , the proposed route will take them along Garscube Road, down St George's Road and along Sauchiehall Street before turning onto West George Street where the lodge will lay a wreath in George Square.

The parade will then continue down George Street, onto High Street, before turning into the Gallowgate and onto London Road at Moir Street and passing St Alphonsus'.

The march is set to pass the building after 12pm, as parishioners are gather and Canon White welcomes them for Saturday mass.

The County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow will then close the procession at Glasgow Green.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “We are still in the early stages of handling this notification and will consult with our colleagues at Police Scotland in due course.”

The County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow declined to comment on the parade.

The parade is one of six marches by loyal order organisations that plan to pass either of the churches where Canon White is priest.

On Saturday, May 11, around 50 members of the Dalmarnock Orange and Purple District 50 will pass St Mary's, before marching alongside St Alphonsus' during mass a week later with 100 participants.

The Dalmarnock No Surrender Branch Club and Apprentice Boys of Derry (Bridgeton) groups will collectively take 130 of their members past the Calton church on June 1.

The following day, 60 men from the Orange and Purple District 37 will also parade past St Alphonsus' before morning mass takes place.

Last week, members of the Apprentice Boys cancelled a march planned for Easter Sunday after being forced to re-route the parade by Glasgow City Council.

Police Scotland had warned of potential for significant disorder if the walk went ahead as initially planned.

This was the second time since the attack on Canon White that a march by a loyalist group in Glasgow has had to be re-routed away from St Alphonsus', with protests taking place during other parades past other churches where he is the priest.
