A BANKIE triplet has arrived in Florida for potentially life-saving cancer treatment.

Caleb Stirrat, along with his sisters, parents and grandparents flew to Jacksonville on Monday for proton therapy.

The three-year-old from Parkhall has already had surgery and two sessions of chemo to push back the ATRT (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour), a rare and fast-growing tumour of the brain and spinal cord.

Caleb and his family were originally intending to fly earlier in April but were delayed by low platelet and haemoglobin numbers, requiring transfusions and injections to boost his levels.

But he was still smiling when he and his sisters set off for their adventure on Monday and arrived in the Sunshine State after nearly 24 hours of travel.

The community has been busy fundraising to help support Caleb, sisters Poppy and Alyssia, and parents Karen and Andy.

Karen's aunt, Claire Smith, said: “It’s another positive step in Caleb’s recovery.

“Without the community’s help, it wouldn’t have been possible to take Caleb’s sisters and grandparents.

“Looking at this picture you can see Caleb needs them.

“Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. We are overwhelmingly grateful.”

The family will stay in Jacksonville for the next three months and Caleb will get more treatment when he returns to the UK.

Treatment will be at the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute. Proton therapy is often credited with having fewer side effects than traditional radiation and doctors have more control over where the beams are targeted.

The NHS is covering flights and accommodation for Caleb and parents, and money was raised to fund his sisters and grandparents to keep the family together and help his recovery.

Fundraising, now totalling more than £10,000 is going towards living expenses.

Speaking earlier this month, mum Karen told the Post: “When we take the girls to visit and he is having a bad day he seems to find that inner strength and it’s like our Caleb is back - the smiley little happy boy he is.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their continued support. We are overwhelmed and have read every comment on our social media pages.”

Karen and taxi driver husband Andy had spent four years trying to conceive before IVF treatment at a clinic in Cyprus gifted them the triplets.

Alyssia, Caleb and Polly were born in January 2016, weighing just 2.2lbs, 2.8lbs and 2.3lbs respectively.

Fundraising has collected more than £10,000 already to support Caleb and his family.
