THE FAMILY of a dog who injured herself while on a walk in Dalmuir Park are raising money to help fund the vet fees that are now into the thousands.

Stella, a Siberian Husky, has lived with Denise Craig, her son Joseph and daughter Pauline, in Clydebank since she was only six months old.

Now aged six, Stella has been back and forth to the vet and animal hospital for the last eight weeks after catching herself on barbed wire in Dalmuir Park.

Denise noticed puncture wounds which she treated before taking Stella to the vet, where they prescribed anti-biotics and advised the wound to be cleaned twice a day.

A week later abscesses had formed underneath the wound and the vet operated on Stella, who was allowed home but needed daily trips to the vet to allow the poison to come out.

The wounds ended up getting worse and Stella was referred to the Small Animal Hospital for a CT scan which cost £700 itself.

At this point, the family’s insurance for Stella was maxed out as the costs reached £3,000, so they decided to set up a JustGiving page to help pay for the rest.

Denise said: “Stella is such a loving girl, she has such good patience even with small dogs, she knows the wee dogs are frightened so is gentle.

“I have never had a complaint about her, she rarely barks or howls, she is the perfect pet.”

Stella received a second operation on Friday to ensure the infected tissue was removed from her body, as the poison spread the full way around her chest.

The surgery is estimated to cost a further £4,000 with the aftercare.

Denise added: “Since the cuts happened Stella has not been able to run about like she usually does. She has been really sad since she’s been going to the hospital.”

However, Stella is now back at home with her family and recovering after weeks of treatment.
