STUDENTS at West College Scotland’s Clydebank campus scooped a large number of places at the UK’s largest student hairdressing, make-up and beauty competition.

Following previous success at the regional heat in February, students travelled to Blackpool last month for the national heat of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competition.

Cara Tonfoni, 17, who is studying Introduction to Fashion Makeup at the Clydebank campus placed Silver in the 14+ Face Painting category.

She said: “The competition gave me more confidence and improved my speed of face-painting. I loved the atmosphere and seeing all the different competitions taking place.”

“The standard was really high, and this has made me want to work harder and improve on my skills. I can’t wait to go back next year and compete, and it let me have the opportunity to meet students from other classes.”

Additional direct entry competitions in hair, beauty and make-up took place over the two-day event, giving students the opportunity to enter other similar competitions.

This provided a second chance for success, or for those who wanted to push themselves by entering multiple competitions.

Janet Munn, lecturer at West College Scotland, said: “The competitions are a great platform for students to experience the fantastic skill levels and creativity from competitors north and south of the border.

“It’s a huge learning curve and confidence booster that encourages students to find their inner competitive streak and motivation to enter time and time again to achieve their goals.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to build great working relationships with students from other courses and promotes good team building skills.

“It’s so nice to see those relationships continue within the college and see the students encourage and support one another throughout their coursework.”
