PARENTS at a Knightswood school have warned pupils are at risk thanks to a lack of a crossing guard at a busy junction.

Youngsters heading to and from Bankhead Primary have been left without assistance for weeks after the guard who stood at Polnoon Avenue went off ill.

There also hasn’t been a crossing patroller across Alderman Road at Polnoon Avenue, which parents said also needed support for pupils.

Martin Bell, whose son Micah, 10, attends Bankhead, told the Post: “I’m really afraid in the morning. One crossing guard is not enough because the junction is too big.

“It’s just not good enough.”

Martin and other parents recently helped youngsters cross the street because of their worries.

He said a subsequent check by council officials found there were 712 vehicles through the junction between 8.30am and 9am on one morning, but only nine children.

But he said most parents have made other arrangements for their children in recent weeks, such as driving them to school, for their safety.

A council spokeswoman said: “Due to staff absence and a general shortage of school crossing patrollers across the city, the designated crossing position at Polnoon Avenue has been unmanned for a few weeks.

“Messages have been sent to parents to advise them of the current situation, apologise for the inconvenience and remind them of their responsibility for getting their child to and from school safely.

“A new campaign is currently running to recruit more school crossing patrollers, amongst other roles and anyone who is interested in applying for a position should visit glasgow.gov.uk/jobs.”
