NEW figures have revealed how Drumry rail station is the worst in Scotland for being skipped by trains.

Of the 2,131 incidences of stop skipping in 2018, Drumry was missed 166 times.

Anniesland came second with 158 and Westerton was third at 142. Singer was in seventh position with 107.

Ross Greer, Green MSP for West Scotland, said the figures were much lower than in 2017, reflecting ScotRail’s policy to only skip stations as a last resort.

He said: “The problems needing solved are a lack of staff, old trains prone to breakdown, single track lines which should be doubled and more. Ending stop-skipping without solving those just changes the problem to one of more late and cancelled trains.

“And it’s important to note that stop-skipping hasn’t been eliminated completely. People are still being left stranded or unable to make vital appointments. This is a particular outrage for disabled people who are left at stations without the facilities needed to meet their needs.

“Abellio need stripped of the ScotRail contract and our trains brought back into public ownership as soon as possible. More immediately and locally though, we need to invest in measures that’ll help trains run reliably, like redualling Westerton Junction, where trains frequently have to wait for late-running trains on the Milngavie line.”

ScotRail insisted they were working hard and there are 2,400 services on their network every weekday.

A spokesman said: “We pledged to suspend skip-stopping, except as a last resort. That is exactly what has happened, and customers are feeling the benefit of this improvement.

“We know there is more to do and we are working flat out to deliver the level of service that our customers deserve.”

But Clydebank MSP Gil Paterson blamed Westminster for the mess because they control Network Rail.

He said: “If anyone thinks the way the UK Government set up our rail system is ever going to work efficiently, they are kidding themselves on. If you were setting up a system to fail this would be the blueprint.

“ScotRail is responsible for the trains and carriages, timetables and ticketing in our railway system. ScotRail is devolved to the Scottish Government.

“Network Rail is responsible for rail tracks, bridges, tunnels, viaducts, signals, level crossings and stations. Network Rail is under the control of the UK Government - 60 per cent of delays are caused by faults in our rail infrastructure.

“ScotRail cannot fix the problems with our rail infrastructure, they cannot re-twin tracks that have been reduced to single lines, they can’t fix broken signalling, infrastructure is not in their remit. If the network isn’t working the trains won’t run.

“Is it any wonder it’s a shambles? Now it’s important to say that this is not in any way a reflection on the people working in the service who are doing their best to try to make a broken system work.

“We will not have an efficient railway until the whole system is under one authority. Network Rail in Scotland must be fully devolved to the Scottish Parliament so that we can produce an integrated and effective railway system for Scotland now, and plan the development of our railways for the future.”
