A DUNTOCHER man who was found in possession of a ‘taser’ device at his home has been given a final opportunity to comply with a court order to meet social workers for a background report – despite a sheriff’s suspicions that he’s “just a chancer”.

Steven McCloy, 42, was found with the prohibited weapon at his home in Bremner Cottages in August 2017.

He appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last Friday, when his lawyer, Mr Lambie, said McCloy suffered from epilepsy and had been unable to attend an appointment with the social work department to have the report prepared on January 31 because he had had a seizure.

But Sheriff William Gallacher said: “Is it true? I don’t need a report; are you inviting me to consider something other than a custodial sentence?”

Mr Lambie said he was asking for a further continuation for the report to be prepared without McCloy being remanded in custody.

“He suffers from epilepsy, and he's getting medication,” Mr Lambie told the court.

“The information I have from him is that he suffered a seizure on January 31.

“He didn’t seek medical attention for that.”

Sheriff Gallacher replied: “Why should I believe him? Why shouldn’t I think he’s just a chancer?”

Fiscal depute Martina McGuigan then showed the sheriff the weapon, which was described as having "the appearance of a large key fob for a car".

After considering his options the sheriff said: “I’m going to give him one further chance. If he doesn’t turn up again, I don’t care what the reason is – I’ll remand him in custody.”

Addressing McCloy directly, the sheriff added: “I’m not sure I trust you. You’d better turn up.”

Sentence was deferred until March 6.
