Today's trip down memory lane takes us back 15 years to the end of the road for Knightswood bus depot.

Here's how the Post reported the story back on Thursday, January 29, 2004...

AFTER 72 years Knightswood bus depot has terminated.

But with a multi-million pound new garage in Scotstoun normal service will be improved.

That’s what chiefs at operator First Glasgow claim after they switched services to a new £5 million Scotstoun depot at the weekend.

The state-of-the-art South Street facility is the first of its kind to be built in the city since 1965.

It will replace the company’s ageing west end fleet hub at Knightswood.

The size of the company’s fleet and workforce was dwarfing the historic Great Western Road depot, thought to be one of the longest serving bus garages.

Built in 1932, the site which survived wartime blitz fallout and a changing transport industry for generations, was deemed inadequate for modern needs.

Managing Director Eric Stewart welcomed the new depot, pledging that it would allow First to continue improving services.

Mr Montgomery said: “We are delighted to have opened this brand new depot in the heart of Glasgow’s industrial area.

“As well as investing in new buses for our passengers, we are matching this by building new facilities for our staff, which will undoubtedly allow us to continue to expand our bus network and improve bus services for customers.”

Alistair Watson, chair of SPT, said: “This most recent investment in both staff, and the quality of services is a huge boost to the city’s transport system and will ensure that bus passengers receive the best possible care and attention.”

The 223 strong fleet began operating from the new seven-acre site last week. Custom-built maintenance areas and staff offices, as well as gym and shower facilities for staff and a modern canteen are included in the new site.

The former Knightswood bus depot will now be demolished to make way for a housing development by new owners Park Lane.
