Today's trip down memory lane takes us back ten years to when then health secretary Nicola Sturgeon visited a local school.

Here's how the Post reported the story back on Wednesday, January 28, 2009...

A SCHOOL in the area welcomed health secretary Nicola Sturgeon to launch a healthy living initiative.

The jogscotland scheme aims to encourage young Scots to become more active through walking, jogging and running programmes.

And primary seven girls from St Brendan’s Primary, in Yoker, showed Ms Sturgeon how they keep fit through their co-operative junior jogscotland group.

Ms Sturgeon said: “The programme is a great way to get children to enjoy exercise. The benefits of physical activity to health and wellbeing are enormous and the Scottish Government is committed to increasing participation.

“Evidence shows that healthy patterns of behaviour can stay with a child for life.

“It is important that we continue to encourage everyone, especially young people, to realise the benefits of physical activity and incorporate it into their daily routine.”

Nearby Corpus Christi and St Paul’s primary schools also use the six-week programme, with all participating schools coming together to run in an annual fun run in May.

Alistair Currie, manager of jogscotland, said: “The jogscotland programme was created to tackle obesity and lack of physical activity among children in Scotland, while showing them that being active can be fun.”
