While the 'New Year, New You' craze encourages us to improve ourselves and make changes in our lives, it can also add more pressure and elicit a feeling of low self-worth. To avoid this, there are simple steps you can take, with the help of some firms, to encourage more fulfilling and longer lasting positive effects. From volunteering to wellbeing, here are some companies willing to help you start your journey…

Volunteer Glasgow

There are 100s of volunteering opportunities in Glasgow looking for people like you to help.

Evidence shows that people who volunteer are healthier, happier and more employable. It can help you become more confident, meet new people, build your CV and be part of something that makes a difference.

Without volunteers many organisations, charities, community groups and clubs would not be able to provide the services that support young people, children and some of the most vulnerable people in our city.

There’s a huge variety of activities you can get involved in, from administration, childcare, shop work to sport and some opportunities only need a few hours each month.

If you are looking to improve your employment prospects, you could join Volunteer Glasgow's Volunteering Works Program, which is an employability program that promotes volunteering as a pathway to work.

You can drop in to the city centre office during opening hours (Tuesdays & Wednesday 9.30-4.30; and Thursday 9.30-6.00) and search online using their internet PCs with help and guidance from an adviser. Alternatively you can open an account and search directly for opportunities on the website at www.volunteerglasgow.org, allowing you to get in touch with organisations looking for volunteers.

If you would like to talk with Volunteer Glasgow or have any questions, then email info@volunteerglasgow.org  or give them a call during office hours on 0141 226 3431, or just drop in to the office.

Say Women

No one should have to cope alone, especially homeless young women who are survivors of sexual violence.

SAY Women set up their unique services to address the complexities of sexual abuse and homelessness nearly 30 years ago. Balancing one to one survivor support with accommodation provision and accredited training services to local authorities, addressing the issues around sexual violence which can cause continual tenancy breakdowns. SAY Women is currently growing and could work with your organisation to deliver awareness and tools, or partner with your housing association to provide supported tenancies for young women.

Clydebank Post:
Do you need support? You’re not alone- drop in to their office on Bell Street, for one to one support, and accommodation support in partnership with Shettleston Housing Association- the space is a safe and supportive environment that can help you to work through your experiences and start a new chapter.

Can you help? The Kiltwalk is the UK’s fastest growing charity, and by taking part, for every pound you raise SAY Women get an additional 40p. For serious walkers or a fun family day out, if you can raise £200 of sponsorship they’ll pay your registration fees. You can donate online direct to SAY Women on their website, or appoint them your charity of the year within your company.

Clydebank Post:

SAY Women will hold a conference to raise awareness of the complex needs of young women who have experienced sexual abuse and violence later in the year. You can find out more about SAY Women on www.say-women.co.uk

In the last year, 93 per cent of callers reported a drop in worry levels after contacting the Helpline.

Feedback from callers emphasised the difference that seeking advice can make:

“Thank you, I don't know how to express how thankful I am. You set me on the right road and there is light at the end of the tunnel so I don't need to hide anymore.”
