Bankies going away during the festive period are being urged not to post their travel plans on social media as this could alert thieves to an empty house.

They should also install a timer to switch lights on and off so that the house appears to be occupied.

The advice, from Chubb, is included in ten tips for staying safe over Christmas.

Chubb also advises not to keep keys in a place visible from the outside, such as hanging on hooks, and don’t hide keys near a door, such as under the doormat, as thieves know where to check.

Install a motion-activated exterior light to welcome you home after dark – and also deter unwanted visitors.

Outside, be aware of your surroundings, lock your car and take care of high-value belongings like mobile phones, which have become a popular target for thieves.

Fit a smoke alarm and CO alarm and regularly test them – and keep a fire blanket or suitable extinguisher handy in the kitchen.

Don’t place your Christmas tree by a log-fire, radiator or heater. Turn all tree lights off before going to bed.

Never leave candles, fires or open flames unattended, and ensure children are always supervised when around fires, candles or matches.
